What is Organic Cotton?

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is simply cotton that is grown without the use of pesticides. Cotton was largely grown organically for some 5000 years up until the mid 20th century. To farm organically is essentially to work with nature as opposed to working against it. By using such methods as introducing beneficial predators, biological diversity, efficient water irrigation, mulches, crop rotations and cover crops - farmers no longer need to use synthetic fertilizers and harmful pesticides. Thus, organic cotton is more natural and safe for the environment and for all of us who consume it.
By choosing organic cotton, we increase demand within the cotton industry. Therefore motivating more farmers to change there methods to a healthier and more financially viable method of farming.

Why Organic Cotton for my baby?

Organic cotton is less processed than conventional cotton so maintains more of it natural softness and strength. Making it not only a superior fabric in comfort but also endurable in its wear and wash adventures.

Now this is where it gets really scary and personal! Toxic pesticides that have been applied to cotton during the farming process have been detected in cotton clothing. Pesticides do not break down very easily, if at all, and simply remain on cotton fibers and from there may be transferred onto anything it comes into contact with - including babies skin!

Why Organic Cotton for the Environment?

The cotton industry is responsible for 16 - 24% of all insecticides unnecessarily used world wide. These pesticides are incredibly hazardous nerve agents and are not only threatening to our wildlife and freshwater resources, but also those who work in the cotton fields primarily in the developing world.

Organic cotton is not only more eco friendly and socially sustainable but is more economical for farmers in the developing world who struggle to afford expensive pesticides and find themselves in spiraling debt to even purchase them.
